Address: 3133 Dumbarton St. NW. n partnership with the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, Dumbarton Concerts welcomes all 18 members of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, led by Artistic Director Charlie Young, in a performance featuring John Coltrane’s lauded 1964 work, A Love Supreme. One of jazz music’s most critically acclaimed recordings, A Love Supreme has come to be viewed as one of the greatest albums of all time, a deeply spiritual work, and Coltrane’s masterpiece. This program is part of the Sounds of Faith music series, a component of the museum’s Religion in America initiative and made possible by generous support from Lilly Endowment Inc. The initiative explores the nation’s unique religious development and myriad traditions as integral components of our shared history. Join us at 6:00 p.m. for a pre-concert talk by Dr. Leonard Brown, author of John Coltrane and Black America’s Quest for Freedom: Spirituality and the Music and Associate Professor Emeritus of Ethnomusicology, African American Music History, and Jazz Studies at Northeastern University. Join us on Sunday, December 9th, at 2:00 pm for a special edition of Jazz in the Basement with accomplished jazz pianist Monika Herzig. From 2:00 to 3:00, Herzig will perform music from her repertoire, which includes works by jazz legends like Chick Corea, Marian McPartland, Dave Brubeck, and Vince Guaraldi. Joining her for part of the set will also be D.C.-based saxophonist Leigh Pilzer. The concert will be followed by a holiday celebration, complete with German holiday treats and German beer.
